Congress general secretary (Uttar Pradesh-East) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is likely to contest the Lok Sabha elections of 2019 from Varanasi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. If she contests, it will be the most interesting battle to watch out for. Sources from the party revealed the big news and also said that she has left the final call on Congress President Rahul Gandhi.
Modi is currently the sitting Member of Parliament from Varanasi. He had won by a massive margin of 3.70 lakh votes from the seat in the Lok Sabha elections of 2014. Arvind Kejriwal came second with over 2 lakh votes. Congress candidate Ajay Rai received around 75,000 odd votes.
Surprisingly, posters urging Priyanka Gandhi to contest the coming elections from Varanasi came up in the city. The Congress Chief of the holy city also requested Priyanka to contest from there. Modi has had a great grip over the voters of Varanasi but people demanding Priyanka to contest from there has made the competition interesting.
Priyanka had already hinted of standing against Modi during her recent visit to Raebareli. When the party workers there requested Priyanka to stand for elections, she responded by asking if she should contest from Varanasi.
Sources revealed the following information:
1. A certain camp in Congress wants Priyanka to take on PM Modi in Varanasi.
2. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu also advised Rahul Gandhi to field Priyanka Gandhi against PM Modi.
3. Buzz from Congress is that the SP-BSP coalition should support Priyanka if she contests from Varanasi.
Earlier, there were speculations that Sonia Gandhi's daughter Priyanka Gandhi, who had recently joined politics would be contesting from Raebareli. But, it was cleared when Congress' candidate list for Raebareli was released which had Sonia Gandhi's name to contest from that seat. It was also said that Priyanka would not be contesting and will just campaign for brother Rahul and mother Sonia in Amethi and Raebareli respectively.
The news of Priyanka contesting the polls came as a game changer which will definitely affect the present Bharatiya Janata Party-led government.
The first phase of elections has completed successfully and the remaining Lok Sabha elections will be conducted in six phases. The final results of the election will be declared on 23rd May 2019.
