A recent Instagram data breach exposed private data of millions of influencers.
The digital world has grown by leaps and bounds with vast exposure and connectivity. However, it comes with many disadvantages too. Hacking, data breach scams and other security issues are indiscriminately increasing in today's online world. The social media giant Instagram is now at the centre of the news for a massive data leak issue. Personal information of millions of people mostly celebrities, influencers and brands have been leaked on Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform.
What type of information has been leaked?
The data leak affected mostly high-profile accounts of popular Indian celebrities and bloggers.
The database exposed both, public and private information like their phone numbers, money transactions, email IDs, profile pictures, bio, total followers, location, etc. It also revealed a record that calculated the net worth of Instagram influencers based on their followers, reach of their post and engagement.
How did the leak happen?
Reportedly, the database that was hosted on AWS was left without a password, which allowed anyone to look into it and grab the information pertaining to the Instagram influencers.

This database leak was first discovered by a Mumbai-based Indian marketing firm Chtrbox. Chtrbox connects bloggers and celebrities with brands and pays them to post sponsored content. The firm said that its clientele of more than 1,80,000 has been the victim of this data breach. It also added that the breach is huge and is spreading every hour.
Facebook, which owns the photo-sharing platform, is looking into the matter and said,
"We’re looking into the issue to understand if the data described – including email and phone numbers – was from Instagram or from other sources. We’re also inquiring with Chtrbox to understand where this data came from and how it became publicly available."
However, this is not the first time Instagram is facing such a security issue. Earlier, in 2017, the platform had a bug that allowed hackers to gain access to private information of celebrities.
Wondering whether your Instagram account is safe or not? If you are not an influencer or a blogger, then your account is secure as the breach did not occur through any Instagram server.
